Facebook is on top. One of the most popular social networking sites in the world is now on top of the Internet kingdom.
Since the advent of the Internet more than a decade ago, developments have surged so fast as to be nearly bewildering. Social networking has never been so interactive and accessible to almost everyone all around the world. Web sites such as Friendster.com, Myspace.com, Twitter.com, and Youtube.com have been popular to everyone and have provided platforms wherein people can communicate no matter where they are in the world.
Out of all these sites however, none have enjoyed more reach and popularity than Facebook. The way that Facebook has broken into the mainstream is an unbelievable feat in itself. Barely 5 years since it started, Facebook has now claimed the title of the World Wide Web’s top website.
Google’s AdPlanner statistics prove this to be true. According to their statistics, Facebook is the top visited web site in the web. The statistics are mind-boggling. Facebook has roughly 540 million users all around the world who have logged into their Facebook accounts an estimated 570 billion times. This translates to roughly 35% web traffic share and outnumbers all the other non-Google web sites around the World Wide Web.
The statistical survey did not include Internet heavyweights like Google.com and Youtube.com but details just about every other web site out there. They based their stats on the users and page views for each of the top 1,000 sites around the Internet. The statistics also include web sites which employ advertising within their homepages. Web Encyclopedia Wikipedia and Mozilla.com are the only two websites in the top ten that do not have any sort of advertising within their pages.
Web sites such as Mozilla.com, Yahoo.com, Live.com and MSN.com ranked high in the rankings due in part to their being default home pages in certain Internet browsers. Other social networking web sites also made it high on the list, Twitter.com ranked 18th among the 1,000 with a current page view of 5.4 billion. Flickr.com, the photo sharing web site, made it to the 31st page with 1.8 billion page views. LinkedIn ranked at number 56 with over 1.7 billion page views.
Blogging web sites also made it high on the list proving that more and more people are getting hooked up with blogging as a new channel for expressing opinions. Among the blog sites on the list are Blogspot in 7th, WordPress in 12th and Blogger in the 53rd place.
International web sites also made it on the 1,000-strong list. This includes web sites such as Sohu, Sina, Baidu, and 163.com. These web sites are not really in the main stream but enjoy a great following in their local countries. This includes China which ahs stricter policies on social networking such as Facebook and the like.
The emergence of Facebook on top has been mainly due to its rising international popularity. More and more people from different countries log into Facebook to connect with friends and family. It also does not hurt that Facebook has a very unique platform that is both enjoyable and very easy to use. Each month, Google estimates that Facebook gets 540 million unique visitors together with its 570 billion page views. The list excludes advertising networks, adult web sites and sites that do not post public content aside from Google and YouTube.
