Bing Cashback Shut Down

Cutting Rope

Only two years since it was first adopted by Microsoft, Bing Cashback has seen the end of its tunnel. Microsoft has decided to cut the chord on its Bing Cashback mainly due to its lack of traction in the market.

The Cashback was first launched in 2008 as the Live Search Cashback. Cashback aims to help online shoppers get some cash in exchange for doing their shopping online. Basically, users log into Bing and find deals with Microsoft Live’s partner companies. By clicking on the coin icon on the SERPs, users are awarded a small amount of cash returned from their online purchases. When the sum reaches $5, users can then claim the actual cash from the program.

It was popular when it was first launched mainly because many customers had been hit hard by the economic downturn. Cashback was one of the few ways that users can buy what they need without spending as much.

The popularity and potential of the program was enough for Microsoft to bring Cashback to Bing. However, its popularity never crested the levels Microsoft hoped for. After two years, Microsoft then decided to pull the plug and completely nix the program.

In a press release posted on its blog, the company said that though in a lot of ways the Cashback was a great feature; it still did not gain the market share that the company had previously hoped for. The program enabled Microsoft to gain merchant partners who delivered excellent promos to their customers especially during the economic downturn.

Microsoft further added that they are taking everything they have learned from the program and hopefully be able to use them in the future. They will use the lessons learned in improving every other aspect of their business that are primarily designed to give its users not only the best deals but also the best shopping opportunities.

Bing Cashback will remain in operation until the end of July. By then it will be shut down and users will have 12 months to redeem their cash backs. Though there are several other ways that Microsoft can improve on the Cashback, the fact for now remains. It’s the final curtain for Bing Cashback.

I guess it is hard to compete with other cashback sites that operate on a smaller level and have been established a lot longer with easier to obtain rebates eg http://budurl.com/bigcrumbs

This is not good news for the frugal online shoppers. But, why people are so upset with Bing’s closing bell? We have so many cash back sites like FatWallet, AAfter Search, BigCrumbs and lots more to make use of.
