Famous Social Network Displays Top “Liked” Searches

Social media giant Facebook has recently upgraded its searches feature so that it can display results for web and Facebook content based on the number of shares and “Likes.”

It basically works like this: when a user keys in a query to the site’s search field, the results will include those related articles that someone in the user’s network has liked. The rankings of the search results are based on the number of likes an article gets; the most “liked” and shared article gets to be on top and the less “liked” and shared will be at the bottom.

Initially reported by the blog AllFacebook, the new search functionality is something akin to renowned search engine Google. This “like”-based article results from Facebook deviates from Google’s rationale however: instead of depending on the whole online community for help in providing reliable material, the social networking site seems to assume that the opinion of a user’s group of friends (through “Likes” and shares) would give him better results.

Though it has gained much attention, some believe the feature’s content is limited and needs more work. In the sense that it retrieves results of peoples’ names and not about topics in the web, burdens the search feature with several cons. Nevertheless, several parties say Facebook’s newest offering has promise.

According to SearchEngineLand’s Danny Sullivan, the feature could function similar to Google.com’s Social Search, which shows items being shared by friends. Yet the Facebook attribute is something to keep an eye on for updates and improvements.

Recently, Facebook.com received a search patent award for “ranking search results based on the frequency of clicks on the search results by members of a social network who are within a predetermined degree of separation.”

Formed in February 2004, Facebook was formed by Mark Zuckerberg along with his college computer science roommates, Chris Hughes, Eduardo Saverin and Dustin Moskovitz. As of July 2010, the privately owned online company has garnered over 500 million active users.
